What materials can be cut with Boehm hollow punches?
26 January 2024How to pair 2 hollow punches in order to cut a gasket in a single operation?
26 January 2024If my hollow punches no longer cut, can I sharpen them?
We do not recommend sharpening your hollow punches. This would make it difficult to maintain circularity, and could cancel out the hardness of the cutting edge obtained by heat treatment.
We recommend replacing damaged hollow punches with new ones. You'll find them here.
What tools do I need to cut with hollow punches?
First of all, settle down on an adapted workplace, ideally a workbench.
-
To use the "handle+chuck" system, we recommend using a Rivoir 40mm hammer. It is suitable for most applications. A lighter hammer may be sufficient for cutting small diameters in very soft materials.
-
To cut without a handle or chuck (with the material placed on the hollow punch), we recommend to use a wooden, plastic or brass mallet.
Our tools are very sharp and require striking tools to use them. So you have to protect yourself with cut-resistant gloves, goggles and safety shoes.
Which cutting board can I use for cutting with hollow punches?
We sell NYLON cutting boards to use our tools. They are suitable for most applications and have a long life time.
See our cutting boards.
Alternatively, you can use a cutting board for cooking or a hardwood plate.
For very thin materials, it would be better to use a hard support like an aluminium or brass plate. It will prevent the material from sinking in the board.
Don't hesitate to contact us for advices and further information.
Can I use a press with BOEHM hollow punches ?
Yes. Any type of press is compatible (manual, electric, pneumatic, etc.), provided the movement is slow and the cutting support is suitable.
The chuck is fixed or not on the movable section of the press and the material to be cut must be on a receiving plate which doesn’t damage the hollow punch.
We have designed some support tools which allow the locking of our punches on manuel rack press, particularly the EMG manual press. You'll find them in the section Adaptors for press.
